Christian Diedrich, IBM CFO North-East Europe dichiara che IBM è ben posizionata per quanto non immune nell' attuale contingenza economica. "Il risultato finanziario del primo trimestre evidenzia una IBM con bilanci in equilibrio e forte liquidità. Pur con aree di miglioramento, la compagnia rimane fiduciosa sul 2009".

Il CAE ( European Works Council) riconosce che l'IBM ha mantenuto "le posizioni" nell' attuale situazione economica. Ciònonostante , il CAE non può accettare le cosìdette 'attività di ristrutturazione silenziosa' , tipo quelle che stanno avvenendo negli Stati Uniti e si aspetta di essere informato e coinvolto nel caso di qualsiasi misura che tenda a ridurre i costi in Europa, qualunque siano le dimensioni e lo scopo.

Il CAE osserva che sta avvenendo un trasferimento di costi verso il lavoratore, come misura del terzo valore fondamentale IBM , cioè la "fiducia". Il CAE si oppone con forza alla decisone IBM di cancellare i servizi di accesso ad Internet ai lavoratori in telelavoro. Questa misura è in netta contraddizione con la diffusa e propagandata politica 'Green IT', 'Smart' oltre che con l'equilibrio lavoro-vita privata. Dovessoro tutti i lavoratori ritornare al loro posto di lavoro in sede, l'IBM non avrebbe la possibilità di accoglierli!

Il CAE è stato molto sbrigativamente informato sul progetto IRO, Indirect Resource Optimization, in GBS. IRO riguarda la "standardizzazione e centralizzazione delle attività e responsabilità indirette insieme alla riduzione dei costi in diversi settori, mediante Centri Internazionali di Eccellenza".

Lavori Europei stanno per essere trasferiti in centri fuori dall'Europa, principalmente in Asia.

Sebbene il progetto sia in attuazione nel corso di quest'anno, solo informazioni generiche sono state fornite al CAE. E' richiesta una spiegazione urgente delle reali azioni che il management IBM ha pianificato. Il CAE richiede che IBM dia le seguenti informazioni prima del prossimo Comitato Ristretto (18 Maggio).

According to mr. Christian Diedrich, IBM CFO North-East Europe, IBM is well positioned though not immune to the current economic situation. "The first quarter financial results underline IBM's strong cash position and balance sheet. Having areas for improvement, the company remains confident about 2009".

The European Works Council acknowledges that IBM has held its position in the economic downturn. However, the EWC cannot accept any so called 'silent restructuring' activities as already implemented in the US, and expects to be informed and involved, in case of any cost reduction measure for Europe, regardless of size and scope.

The EWC regards transferring of any cost to employees as a misuse of IBM's third value 'trust'. The EWC strongly opposes IBM's decision to withdraw the broadband access 'allowance' for employees working from home. This measure is in clear contradiction with the widely promoted corporate policies 'Green IT', 'Smart' and work/life balance. Should all home workers return to an IBM work place, there will be insufficient facilities to accommodate these employees.

The EWC was very briefly informed about the IRO Project, Indirect Resource Optimization, in GBS. IRO focuses on 'standardization and centralization of indirect activities and responsibilities and the reduction of costs within several work streams, via international centres of excellence'. European jobs are being transferred to centers located outside Europe, mainly in Asia.

Although the project is being deployed during this year, only general information has been provided to the EWC. An urgent explanation of the real actions that IBM management has planned is required. The EWC requests IBM to provide the following information before the next Select Committee meeting (18^th of May):

• the business case
• countries and numbers of the employees affected, dates, budget
• operational details of this plan, ie. how IBM will address the project, redeployment, re-education, etc
• details regarding extension of this action to other lines of business
