Opinione - XXI Meeting

Opinion - XXI Meeting

"Pure speculation about future job movements without any basis in fact". The EWC welcomed this clear statement of EWC Chairman Tim Stevens, regarding recent widespread publications concerning the possible reduction of IBM staff of 75% by 2017. Mr. Stevens stated that these numbers are without any merit – in fact, the comments run counter to IBM's history of growing its global workforce over each of the last eight years.

Taking into account the tough economic situation the EWC is pleased to hear that the Earning per Share (EPS) increased by 16%. The EWC requests a fair share for each of the three stakeholders – the corporation, the shareholders and the employees. The EWC expects to see this reflected not only in the GDP but also in the upcoming salary increase program. Although the EPS goes up, the overall PBC ratings in Europe have gone down. Despite some improvement, the PBC 1 and 2+ rating results of managers were 35% higher than for non-managers. This unfair relative evaluation must not be reflected in the salary increase distribution, as in the Growth Driven Profit sharing (GDP).

Expense cuts achieved by reducing the workforce appear to be implemented regardless of the performance of a country. This results in an increasing pressure on the remaining colleagues, which leads to negative impact on morale and in several cases is followed by stress related health issues. Motivated and skilled employees are the core asset of IBM. Safeguarding education investments at an appropriate level is crucial.

GBS in Europe has been hit very hard by the difficult economic circumstances. It is apparent that IBM needs a new strategy and operational model to boost GBS performance. The EWC questions whether the presented model is addressing the current situation adequately. To further improve 'board room intimacy', IBM needs to make sure that its top talent stays on board.

In the last few years, the training of the Application Services (AS) population in Europe as integral part of GBS has been kept to a minimum. This has eroded the skills base and has made it more difficult to meet customer demands. The strategy to upskill GBS consultants must include AS.

Employees experience that they lose more and more time on administrative tasks and reporting to more than one manager and in more than one tool. These tasks are time consuming and negatively impact increasing utilisation targets. The value add is mostly unclear.
